Last Wednesday, our gas tank finally caught up to our bank account: very nearly empty. Luckily that night, the Young Men* were having a combined activity with the Young Women and so my services (along with my commute) were not that crucial. I was cheerfully granted a bye by the Young Men’s President, who told me to enjoy spending some time with my family. I decided that sounded like a great idea.
So, I decided we were going to go for a walk and get some ice cream from the local Sonic (along with Hyrum’s coupon for a free ice cream cone). I brought the camera along, naturally, and came home a number of shots that I was actually quite happy with.
The ice cream was good, too.
On the way there, after shooting a couple of shots, I was looking at the camera to see how the pictures turned out and Hyrum walked right in front of me. My big ol’ massive man-foot tripped him, which upset him, of course. Mommy rushed to his aid and made everything better with a hug and a piggy-back ride:
At Sonic, the kids got the biggest kick when the waitress brought their ice cream cones in Icee lids (plastic domes with a big hole in the top, apparently just the right size for a cone). The lids held the cones up all by themselves, which probably makes it easier for them to carry on a tray while they skate them out to your car. Hyrum never touched his cone the whole night:
He carried that stick all the way from the house to sonic and made sure that I was carrying it home so that he could run around on the grass with Chloe, and cried when he realized that I had dropped it about a half-a-block from the house.
I went back to get it.
I had a fun time processing this next picture of Hyrum. It’s the first time I tried a technique called cross-processing (which originally resulted from developing one type of film using a process meant for another type, say developing negative film with a process meant for slide film). Here’s the cross-processed shot (one of my three favorite pictures of the night), along with the normal and black-and-white versions:
And here’s the other two favorite pictures of the night:
The walk home was just as beautiful as the time we had spent:
*An organization of the church devoted to, well, the young men. Outside of church, the young men usually have Boy Scout meetings some night of the week, but typically once a month, they meet together with the young women to do something that the youth have put together. Last week, groups of youth were given sets of props and given a short amount of time in which to come up with a skit to perform. Sometimes the activities are service oriented, sometimes just for fun.

maybe you don’t understand my obsession with sonic!!! i loved it in arizona and then utah… and then for the past five years (and currently) i am forced to view sonic commercials EVEN THOUGH THERE IS NO SONIC ANYWHERE!!!!! eat extra lemon-berry cream slushes for me!
the funny thing is that we had never heard of it, really–okay, we’d heard of it–but we’d never been to one before moving here. we hit the sonic in manhattn our first week here while still staying in the super 8 because it has a massive sandbox/playground and we were SUPER bored of staying in the hotel, and we were so wowed we must have gone there 3 or 4 more times that week. seriously.
lemon-berry cream slush, huh? i’ll get right on it.
