I’m not one for reviewing movies. I just can never seem to find the right words to describe what it was about the movie that worked for me or that didn’t. I really appreciate some good movie reviews, though (as long as I agree with them).
But sometimes, the best reviews don’t come from a newspaper, magazine, or blog. Sometimes, they come right in the middle of the movie itself.
If you’ve heard of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (or MST3K, for short), you probably know what I mean. I’ve never been able to watch an entire movie with them before, but they are hilarious. They take old B-movies and film clips and talk about them as the movie is playing. There are silhouettes at the bottom of the screen that make it look like you’re watching this on a big movie screen, sitting behind these guys that just won’t give the movie a break (or you a moment of silence). For example,
This past weekend, Michelle and I finally went to see Spiderman 3. Since Pirates 3 had recently opened, there weren’t really that many people in the theater. A good way to enjoy the movie.
Towards the end of the movie, there’s a scene where Spiderman confronts the Sandman, a bad guy he’d been tangling with the whole movie. The Sandman comes to Spidey to try and convince him that all the bad stuff he had done was all a mistake, motivated by his desire to help an ailing daughter.
Sandman: I was poor. My daughter was sick. I needed money.
Young Kid in the Back: (yelling) Get a job!
It might have been the funniest moment in the movie. Some might argue that the whole disco-strut bit was hilarious, though Michelle found it so painfully embarrassing just to watch, that she actually closed her eyes and asked me to tell her when it was over.
And what did I think?
It was good, but not as good as Spiderman 2. There was that scene on the el-train that gets me every time. Nothing like that here.
You see?
That’s why I leave the movie reviews to those unfortunate souls trapped in the Satellite of Love.
I would love to get some ideas for some editting software. I have been using some that a friend gave us. I really need to take a class because I am realizing that I have a lot to learn. Any suggestions that you might have would be greatly appreciated. Your photos are amazing. I always come on here to sneak a peek. Is Michelle still taking pictures too? Do have my e-mail. I think Michelle has it if you want to drop me a line. Thanks Rik
That brings back memories…I think my childhood would’ve been intolerably too serious if it weren’t for MST3K.
